So what does the Master of Ceremonies do precisely at a marriage? If you have been asked to take on this role you must feel honored as presumably you have been asked as the bride-to-be and bridegroom hold you in high esteem, not because they're attempting to embarrass you in from of their buddies and family.
In the first think to recollect is that the role isn’t about being a comedian. Many people who are asked to take on the task think it’s their opportunity to dazzle as a stand up comic, and indeed, it is appreciated if the Wedding MC does try and make folk laugh; even more so if they find him funny!
But that isn’t the main role . Wedding MC duties really are to be sure the entire day goes smoothly and to sort any of the unavoidable hiccups that happen in the background so the bride and groom can just enjoy their day.
That means as Wedding MC you’ll doubtless have to make some announcements throughout the day to make certain guests know what has happened, where it’s happen and what, if anything, they are supposed tio do.
As an example, the Wedding Line. Where is it (“in the room to the right”); when is it (“in two minutes but don't rush as there are all the guests to meet so join the queue when you are ready”); and what's expected of the guests (“you’ll meet the bride and groom as well as the other members of the wedding party”).
You will also need to observe the clock and if any person requires something they'll need to know to contact you and this of course includes the wedding party as well as guests.
One thing you could have to do is announce each speaker when the marriage speeches happen. Make sure you know who is who and write their names down so you don't make a fool of yourself. You may or may not have to give your own speech, and often that depends on whether or not you are also the best man as the 2 roles can simply be mixed.
Whatever occurs prepare, relax on the day and enjoy it; it's not your important day after all.
