Far too many brides begin gown shopping already fixated on the style they want. While it is helpful to know your own style of course, limiting yourself to the “safe” dress options can also result in a rather dull bridal ensemble. A wedding is the ideal time to push your boundaries and aim for astounding instead of safe. Try a bold wedding gown and you might feel more stunning than you ever believed possible.
Some women are crazy for fashion, drama, and exciting style, and they are likely to explore a wide range of options when shopping for a wedding gown. There are many women who are not interested in clothes, or are self-conscious about their figure. Those are the women who are likely to get stuck trying on the same style of wedding dress over and over, only to be left wondering why they are not getting that “wow” feeling from any of the gowns. It’s commonplace to wear a “uniform” of the same few basics in your daily life, but taking that approach to gown shopping could keep you from finding a spectacular gown that takes your breath away.
Curvy brides might think they need to hide under an empire waist or full skirt. How wrong they are!! Take a chance, curvy brides, and try that drop waist fitted strapless gown. Try a dress with a slimmer skirt that doesn’t hide your hourglass shape, but emphasizes it. I once saw a bride try on a strapless gown with a ruched lace drop waist bodice and tiny pearls (to match her pearl earrings) and a bias cut skirt in a heavy satin. Her curves looked amazing and her waist looked so tiny it was like she was wearing a corset (but she wasn’t!). Did she take advantage of this beautiful dress? Unfortunately, no; she hid under a “safe” dress with an A-line skirt. It was beautiful, but not striking nor extraordinary like the fitted gown.. This bride shows that self-consciousness can keep you from looking as gorgeous as you truly are.
Then there are those brides who have very plain taste. “I want a plain gown”, they will state, “Nothing too fancy”. First of all, a bride cannot be overdressed for her own wedding! If feel like you can’t get all dressed to the nines in a fabulous gown and gorgeous pair of pearl earrings for your wedding day, the chances are that you will never feel like you can in your whole life. Don’t be afraid to experiment with bridal gowns which have embellishments and details, even if your usual style is plain, plain, plain. Break out of your shell and surprise your family with a fabulously detailed gown. I knew one bride who wore jeans and a button down shirt every day, she had no interest in fashion. She chose a feminine silk satin gown with a pearl beaded lace bodice and broke out of her “plain Jane” image. It was amazing on her, and the guests were stunned when they saw how gorgeous and romantic this young woman could be.
Avant-garde and unique wedding gowns can end up being the most remarkable ones, if only brides will take a chance on something out of the ordinary. If your taste leans towards simple and classic, take a risk and try a bridal gown with a flashy or unique bodice– it might knock your socks off! Perhaps you only imagined yourself in a pure white wedding dress; go ahead and try on the pink satin bridal gown you admired in a bridal magazine – it could turn out to be your dream dress. The same thing goes for bridal accessories as well. Trade in your everyday pearl stud earrings for a dramatic pair of pearl chandelier earrings or try on a long crystal lariat necklace. If you take a chance and are bold with your bridal attire, you might find a new daring, beautiful side of yourself!
